The East Tennessee
and Southwest Virginia Digital Archives Collection
is an ongoing project that was initially created
a few years ago as a fun, non-profit venture
in the interests of preserving ancestral photographs
and historic documents pertaining to the areas
of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. In
the early stages, we began to digitize several
hundred well-identified photos and documents
and store them in an off-site location. Over
the years, the collection has since evolved
into a massive collection of over 40,000 photographs
and other digital files which now include images
of early ancestors, their homes, tombstones,
Bible records, deeds, wills, obituaries, diaries,
ledgers, and other items of genealogical and
historical interest.
Submissions
Submissions to the Digital Archives Collection
are free and may be mailed to Shelia Hunt, P.O.
Box 3826, Kingsport, TN 37664. Any photos you
submit will be tagged with your name and address
as official donor, which will allow others researching
your lines to contact you in the future. We
accept high-quality scanned images (300 dpi)
or better, and ask that you include as much
identification as possible about the photo.
Any originals sent to the collection will be
returned within 3 days. Email
Shelia
Hunt for further information.
The Index
At present,
the indexing aspect of our Digital Archives
is a massive, ongoing project. Eventually, we
hope to have the index to the Archives collection
online. If you currently would like us to check
the Archives for photos of your ancestors, please
supply us with the full name and dates of birth
and death for your ancestor and information
about where he lived.
Getting Copies
We will be happy to check
the indices to see if we have anything on your
ancestor. Just drop us an email.
Future of the Collection
It
is our hope that the East Tennessee and Southwest
Virginia Digital Archives Collection will be
eventually placed in the Sullivan County Archives,
located in the heart of East Tennessee and Southwest
Virginia.
