April 11, 2003, 1:15 - 4:15 p.m., ETSU Kingsport
Two genealogy classes will be taught by Shelia Steele Hunt on Friday April 15 beginning at 1:15 at ETSU Kingsport (TN). The first session will cover Beginning Genealogy and the second session will cover Internet Genealogy. The general public is cordially invited. Call ETSU Kingsport for registration.

April 17, 2003, 7:00 p.m., Blountville, Tennessee

On Thursday, April 17, 2003, the Sullivan County Genealogical Society will play proud host for a rare viewing of “The Hagan Documents” which will be showcased in a premier, one-of-kind presentation by Shelia Steele Hunt of Kingsport. Never before viewed by the public, the 57 volumes of rare documents will be on display and featured by Ms. Hunt in her presentation entitled, “The Hagan Documents: The Story of Patrick Hagan of Dungannon, Virginia”. The papers include thousands of notes, letters, and business documents collected by Patrick Hagan of Scott County and by his son Charles Hagan of Bristol, Virginia. Dated between 1830 and 1930, the historic documents richly portray the life and times of hundreds of individuals and businesses in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee during that time-frame. The Genealogical Society will hold the meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville. Admission is free, and the general public is cordially invited to attend the viewing. For further information, contact President Mike Poe at 423-323-1477.

May 4-9, 2003 Salt Lake City Family History Research Tour
This is the second of our group educational research tours to Salt Lake City. Departing from the Sullivan County Library at Blountville, Tennessee, the group will travel to the Salt Lake City Family History Library where they will enjoy a week of research at the famous Mormon Library as well as the Joseph Smith Building. Anyone interested in participating in the tour may contact Shelia Steele Hunt.

June 14, 2003 Wise County, Virginia Family Heritage Days
This genealogy event will be hosted by the Wise County Genealogical Society and will be held at the Wise County Courthouse in Wise, Virginia. Shelia Steele Hunt will present a genealogy workshop, with various topics including Beginning Genealogy, Finding Your Ancestors on the Internet and more. Various vendors will be on hand with books.

June 19, 2003, 6:30 p.m., 7th Annual SCGS Genealogy Picnic, Bay's Mountain Park in Kingsport, Tennessee
The 2003 7th Annual SCGS Genealogy Picnic will be held at Bay's Mountain Park... Plan to come out and enjoy! Our guest speaker will be Brent Kennedy, Ph.D., who will be speaking to the group about Melungeon heritage. Bring a covered dish, lawn chair, and any family history you wish to "show and tell". Bring your family and friends and anyone interested in any phase of family history, as this is not limited to just SCGS members... Anyone interested in genealogy or Melungeon heritage is cordially invited to bring a dish and join us... Email Mike Poe for further information.

July 19, 2003, Kingsport/TN, Funfest Genealogy Workshop
The Kingsport Public Library will host a genealogy workshop at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2003 in the Meade Auditorium of the library in downtown Kingsport. The workshop includes two lectures presented by Professional Genealogist, Shelia Steele Hunt. In her first lecture, Ms. Hunt will provide a step-by-step introduction to family history in "Beginning Genealogy". The second presentation is entitled "The Hagan Documents: The Story fo Patrick Hagan of Dungannon, Virginia", and will include a showcase of 57 volumes of rare documents which include thousands of notes, letters, and business docuemtns collected by Patrick Hagan of Scott County and by his son Charles Hagan of Bristol, Virginia. Dated between 1830 and 1930, the historic documents richly portray the life and times of hundreds of individuals and businesses in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee during that time-frame. Admission is free, and the general public is cordially invited to attend the viewing. Jul 26, 2003, Knoxville/TN, Genealogy Workshop hosted by the Tennessee State Library and Archives at the East Tennessee Historical Center in Knoxville. Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. "Researching Early Court Records" will be one of the major topics presented by Shelia Steele Hunt of Hunt Genealogy & Associates. Aug 21, 2003, SCGS meeting, 7:00 p.m., Sullivan County Library in Blountville
John S. Gaines, Ph.D. of Bristol will present a lecture on, "The Odyssey of an Exchange Place Descendant". A direct-line descendant of John Strother Gaines, born circa 1794, Dr. Gaines will address the group about the historic Exchange Place located in present-day Kingsport, Tennessee. The Exchange Place is a preserved, early 19th century farm complex built by the John Gaines family circa 1820 and later owned by the Preston family after 1847. Widely known to many historians, the Exchange Place was located where the Great Stage Road crossed Eaton's Ridge (now Chestnut Ridge) and served as a stopover for providing fresh horses and exchange of currency. The lecture is free and and the general public is cordially invited.


Sep 18, 2003, SCGS meeting, 7:00 p.m., Sullivan County Library in Blountville

Sure to be fun and informative, this exciting meeting will focus on "Computers and Genealogy", with a live demonstration of the newly released RootsMagic as well as a review of Reunion. The floor will also be open to discussion of the latest techniques in using computers to enhance your genealogy. The open forum includes discussions of the following.

  • RootsMagic - A live demonstration of this year's newly released genealogy program
  • Reunion - A review of this unique program for the Mac
  • Personal Ancestral File (PAF) - A review of the LDS's family history program
  • Hot Genealogy Websites
  • Other Computer Programs for Use in Genealogy
